Audience research had revealed a perceived “East Coast” bias in NPR’s reporting. To address this long standing criticism, and to expand and balance its national news coverage, NPR established a production base in southern California. The invitation to the inauguaration of this new state-of -the-art facility needed to capture the breadth and diversity of the American “West” from which NPR reporters could offer another perspective on the news.
